Singletons or Inferior Functions

These are areas of focus in a chart.  They are areas of stress or of possible neurosis, however these inferior functions suggest that there is more genius potential in the person due to the higher than normal number of planetary modes or elements in one or two other areas.  People can find their missing element or mode through a relationship or by learning to consciously develop the area in question.

  • Michelangelo used his lack of the Earth element in his world acclaimed statue of David. His tremendous ability to sculpt and paint provided the grounding (earth) that he was lacking.  Also there is a possibility of being uncomfortable with the body and a tendency to deal with it through drugs and alcohol:- Rita Hayworth, Vivien Leigh, Judy Garland, Joan Crawford, Jackie Gleeson and Richard Burton, or by over-developing the body:- Arnold Schwarzenegger, Charles Atlas and  Johnny Weismuller.

  • Some of the most brilliant authors and poets have a missing or inferior function in Air (thinking, writing and communicating).  Incredible geniuses and great thinkers such as:- Thomas Jefferson, Tolstoy, Edgar Allen Poe, H G Wells, Ernest Hemingway, George Bernard Shaw to name just a few.  On another level, there are many actors and they tend to be in one of two categories; either articulate:- Rex Harrison, Laurence Olivier, Peter Ustinov and Richard Burton or those that are known to be less articulate or mumble:- Montgomery Clift, James Dean, Marlon Brando, Warren Beatty, Robert Redford and Jack Nicholson.
